The Technology Transfer Laboratory is a group of the Institute comprised primarily of graduate students who perform research and development projects as well as studies focused on immediate needs of the professional community. The projects seek out promising technologies that can be adapted to learning and performance improvement purposes.

General Parameters

The following summarizes the primary operational guidelines for the laboratory:

  • Projects are formulated with a sponsoring organization that provides the major requirements and proposed outcomes
  • Selection of projects is related to their degree of innovation and risk; more innovative, higher risk, emerging technology investigations, usability testing of promising learning innovations, learning models or development of prototypes are preferred
  • Work is project-focused with a timeline not likely to exceed 10 weeks
  • Work is conducted by graduate students, with preference allocated those in WSU partner programs
  • General supervision is provided by full-time faculty within the institute
  • Activities of the Laboratory are designed to avoid competing with area vendors or other private sector organizations
  • Outputs of activities are negotiated with the sponsoring organization
  • Sponsoring organizations agree to the possibility of publication of the findings

How the Work is Funded

The Laboratory is supported wholly by external funds in two ways. First an organization may provide direct funding for a project of specific interest to their organization. Alternatively, an organization may contribute funds to support research and development on a general topic in exchange for exclusive briefings on the results of the investigations. For this latter form of involvement, the organization is designated as a "Corporate Partner" of the Laboratory. If a specific project is desired, the amount of funding is negotiated and would "purchase" a certain amount of time allocated for the financial support of the graduate students, with a minor amount of administrative costs. Specialized equipment or resources needed to conduct the investigation beyond that available on campus will need to be supplied by the sponsoring organization.
