  • Workplace Education and Training
The Workplace Education and Training (WPED) program with the mission of "Helping adults meet the challenge of today's workplace" has significantly enhanced the workplace opportunities of undereducated adults in Detroit. By developing and validating innovative instruction for core competency training, literacy and pre-technical skills for individuals in low-wage jobs, the program helps to close the growing gap between educationally disadvantaged adults and well-paying careers. The program works jointly with community-based organizations, urban neighborhood centers, and businesses. The results add value to the urban community by leveraging WSU's capabilities to expand, demonstrate and develop new programs that have an impact on improving workforce quality. Major efforts are directed in the following areas:
    • Research and application of innovative delivery strategies
    • Demonstration projects in workplace and family literacy
    • Strategy development of regional educational coalitions and partnerships
    • Outreach to the business community
